India’s rising import dependence for securing coal supplies to its thermal power plants has considerably reduced over the past couple of months, as the supply shortage has gradually eased out with Coal India ramping up production levels as of late.
In fact, India’s thermal coal imports have fallen slightly by 0.6% on a month-to-month basis in the month of February to 14.10 million tonnes (MnT), as compared to 14.19 MnT in January, as per the vessel lineup data compiled by CoalMint Research.
On year-on-year basis, however, the country’s non-coking imports rose by about 21.29% in Feb’19 against 11.63 MnT recorded in Feb’18.

Country Wise India Non-Coking Coal Import in Feb’19:
A country-wise break-up of the monthly import data reveals that the major proportion of the Indian non-coking coal import shipments continued to be originated from Indonesia, constituting the highest share of around 70%.
Moreover, Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India rose by 5.5% M-o-M to 9.92 MnT in Feb’19 against 9.40 MnT in Jan’19.
Contrarily, South African non-coking coal supplies to India fell by nearly 54% M-o-M to 1.59 MnT in Feb’19 from 3.45 MnT in Jan’19.
More importantly, Indian thermal coal imports from USA surged by a whopping 211.8% to 1.34 MnT in Feb’19, against 0.43 MnT in Jan’19.
Also, India’s non-coking coal imports from Russia rose by almost 61% M-o-M to around 0.40 MnT in Feb’19 compared with 0.25 MnT in Jan’19; while imports from Australia rose by over 11% M-o-M to around 0.36 MnT in Feb’19 compared with 0.33 MnT in Jan’19.
Notably, India’s non-coking coal imports from Mozambique fell by about 48.3% M-o-M to around 0.17 MnT in Feb’19 compared with 0.33 MnT in Jan’19.
