India’s thermal coal imports have surged by 26.21% on a month-to-month basis in the month of March to 17.80 million tonnes (MnT), as compared to 14.10 MnT in February, as per the vessel lineup data compiled by CoalMint Research.
Moreover, on a year-on-year basis, the country’s non-coking imports rose by about 19.45% to around 153 MnT in FY 2019 against 182.80 MnT in FY 2018.

Country Wise India Non-Coking Coal Import in Mar’19:

A country-wise break-up of the monthly import data reveals that the major proportion of the Indian non-coking coal import shipments continued to be originated from Indonesia, constituting the highest share of around 66%.
Moreover, Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India rose by 18.4% M-o-M to 11.75 MnT in Mar’19 against 9.92 MnT in Feb’19.
More importantly, South African non-coking coal supplies to India surged by nearly 124% M-o-M to 3.56 MnT in Mar’19 from 1.59 MnT in Feb’19.
Contrarily, Indian thermal coal imports from USA dropped by as much as 32% to 0.91 MnT in Mar’19, against 1.34 MnT in Feb’19.
Also, India’s non-coking coal imports from Australia rose by over 79% M-o-M to around 0.65 MnT in Mar’19 compared with 0.36 MnT in Feb’19; while imports from Russia rose by almost 6% M-o-M to around 0.43 MnT in Mar’19 compared with 0.40 MnT in Feb’19.
