India Non-Coking Coal Import Up 20% Y-o-Y in CY18; Imports from USA surged by 109%

Indian non-coking coal imports in the month of December have almost been on par with the imports in November, as per the vessel lineup data compiled by CoalMint Research.

In Dec’18, India’s non-coking coal imports of around 15.00 million tonnes (MnT) were only 0.65% higher on a month-to-month basis, as compared to 14.91 MnT imported in Nov’18.

On year-on-year basis, however, the country’s non-coking imports have surged by about 20.34% to around 176 MnT in CY 2018 against 146 MnT in CY 2017.

Country Wise India Non-Coking Coal Import in Dec’18:

A country-wise break-up of the monthly import data reveals that the major proportion of the Indian non-coking coal import shipments continued to be originated from Indonesia, constituting the highest share of around 64%.

However, Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India fell by 4.24% M-o-M to 9.57 MnT in Dec’18 against 10.00 MnT in Nov’18.

But on year-on-year basis, the Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India totaled 105.86 MnT in CY 2018, which was 9.44% higher than 96.73 MnT imported in CY 2017.

Contrarily, South African non-coking coal supplies to India rose significantly by a whopping 37.65% M-o-M to 3.30 MnT in Dec’18 from 2.40 MnT in Nov’18.

Australian non-coking coal exports to India fell by 18.84% M-o-M to 0.56 MnT in Dec’18 compared with 0.69 MnT in Nov’18.

More importantly, Indian thermal coal imports from USA surged by 108.76% to 12.25 MnT in CY 2018, against 5.87 MnT in CY 2017.
