India Non-Coking Coal Import Down 5.44% M-o-M in Jan’19; Imports from Australia and Mozambique Fall by 41% each

India’s thermal coal imports fell by 5.44% on a month-to-month basis in the month of January to 14.19 million tonnes (MnT), as compared to 15.00 MnT in December, as per the vessel lineup data compiled by CoalMint Research.

On year-on-year basis, however, the country’s non-coking imports rose by about 4.86% in Jan’19 against 13.53 MnT recorded in Jan’18.

Country Wise India Non-Coking Coal Import in Jan’19:

A country-wise break-up of the monthly import data reveals that the major proportion of the Indian non-coking coal import shipments continued to be originated from Indonesia, constituting the highest share of around 66%.

However, Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India fell by 1.8% M-o-M to 9.40 MnT in Jan’19 against 9.57 MnT in Dec’18.

Contrarily, South African non-coking coal supplies to India rose by 4.6% M-o-M to 3.45 MnT in Jan’19 from 3.30 MnT in Dec’18.

Notably, Indian thermal coal imports from USA decreased by 16.5% to 0.43 MnT in Jan’19, against 0.51 MnT in Dec’18.

More importantly, India’s non-coking coal imports from Mozambique and Australia both fell by over 41% M-o-M to around 0.33 MnT in Jan’19 compared with 0.56 MnT in Dec’18.
