Chhattisgarh based Sponge iron & Steel units have decreased Iron ore purchases from NMDC, Chhattisgarh mines to an extent of 22% in the month of Nov’14. Rake movement has declined owing to falling Sponge iron prices and limited Coal supply. Sponge iron prices have corrected by almost INR 1,200/MT (USD 19) M-o-M in Raipur.
It was observed that NMDC, CG dispatched 89 rakes of Iron ore in Nov’14 against 115 rakes in Oct’14. Each rake carries approximately 3,850 MT of raw material.
“There is no parity in raw material & semi finished prices. On one hand, Sponge iron prices have corrected over INR 1,000/MT. On the other hand, Iron ore & Coal prices have not corrected by the same proportions. Most of the Sponge iron units have shut their operation in November. We hope that NMDC cuts Iron ore prices for December deliveries.” said a Sponge iron manufacturer based in Raipur.
NMDC, a state owned India’s largest Iron ore miner, produced about 30 MnT of Iron ore in FY14, out of which, 20 MnT was from Bailadila/Kirandul mines located in Chhattisgarh.
NMDC has reserved about 4-5 MnT of Iron ore for Chhattisgarh based steel units and rest is reserved for RINL, Essar, JSW and KIOCL. Others have to participate in e-auction conducted by NMDC on monthly basis.
