India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC, produced 4.56 million tonnes (mnt) of the steel-making raw material in Jan’22, up by 15% m-o-m, compared to 3.95 mn t in Dec’21, SteelMint learnt from the company’s recent BSE filing.
Out of the total volume produced in Jan’22, a major chunk was recorded from NMDC’s Chhattisgarh mines, at 3.42 mnt, while the remaining 1.14 mnt was extracted from its Karnataka mines. The miner’s production from Chhattisgarh and Karnataka rose significantly by 17% and 11%, m-o-m, respectively.
NMDC recorded the highest cumulative iron ore output of 32.88 mnt in Apr’21-Jan’22, achieving a growth of 28%, as against 25.66 mnt in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).

Iron ore sales rise in Jan’22
NMDC reported a 25% increase in its total iron ore sales in Jan’22 to 4.24 mnt as against 3.40 mnt in Dec’21. Total sales from the Chhattisgarh mines stood at 2.88 mnt and the remaining 1.36 mnt were from its Karnataka mines. Cumulative iron ore sales over Apr’21-Jan’22 stood at 32.60 mnt, a y-o-y rise of 25%, as compared to 26.01 mnt in the same period last year.
India’s top miner boosted production by around 30% y-o-y to 40.62 mnt in 2021 from around 31 mnt in 2020.
