India: NMDC’s iron ore production stable in Nov’21, sales fall

India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC, produced 3.34 million tonnes (mn t) of the steel-making raw material in Nov’21, stable m-o-m, compared to 3.33 mn t in Oct’21, SteelMint learnt from the company’s recent BSE filing.

Out of the total volume produced in Nov’21, a major chunk was recorded from its Chhattisgarh mines at 2.56 mn t, while the remaining 0.78 mn t was extracted from the company’s Karnataka mines. The miner’s production from Chhattisgarh increased by 9% m-o-m. However, production from Karnataka decreased by 21% m-o-m.

NMDC has recorded the highest cumulative iron ore output of 24.37 mn t during FY’22 (Apr-Nov’21) vis-a-vis 17.98 mn t in the corresponding period last year (CPLY). The company achieved a growth of 36% over CPLY overcoming the impact of pandemic.

Iron ore sales down in Nov’21

NMDC reported a 20% decrease in its total iron ore sales in the month under review to 2.88 mn t as against 3.58 mn t in October. Total sales from the Chhattisgarh mines stood at 2.38 mn t and the remaining 0.5 mn t were from its Karnataka mines.

The miner has registered a best-ever sales performance during the period (Apr-Nov’21). The cumulative iron ore sales stood at 24.96 mn t in FY’22, increased 33% over CPLY.

“The latest GDP growth figures suggest a firm recovery of the economy and that is very reassuring although NMDC is already moving forward on its path to doubling production in the next five years”, said Sumit Deb, CMD of NMDC.

Expected production in FY’22 will be around 44-45 mn t in , where 14 mn t will be from Karnataka and the remaining from the Bailadila sector.
