India: NMDC’s iron ore production falls 12% in Sept’21 on extended monsoon

India’s leading iron ore miner, NMDC, produced 2.69 million tonnes (mn t) of the steel-making raw material in Sept’21, down 12% m-o-m, SteelMint learnt from the company’s recent BSE filing.

The production fell due to the extended monsoon.

Out of the total volume produced in Sept’21, a major chunk was recorded from its Chhattisgarh mines at 1.66 mn t, while the remaining 1.03 mn t was extracted from the company’s Karnataka mines. The miner’s production from Chhattisgarh dropped by 22% m-o-m. However, production from Karnataka increased by 12% m-o-m.

NMDC recorded iron ore output of 17.7 mn t in H1FY’22 vis-a-vis 12.24 mn t in the corresponding period last year (CPLY). Cumulative iron ore production in H1FY’22 (Apr-Sept’21) increased 45% over CPLY.

“With best-ever Q2 and half-yearly performance, NMDC has proved yet again that it is on a strong, stable footing to beat the challenges and absorb cyclical volatility,” commented Sumit Deb, chairman-cum-managing Director, NMDC.

Iron ore sales down in Sep’21

NMDC recorded a 6% decrease in its total iron ore sales in the month under review to 2.73 mn t as against 2.91 mn t in August. Total sales from the Chhattisgarh mines stood at 1.87 mn t and the remaining 0.86 mn t was from its Karnataka mines.

The miner’s cumulative iron ore sales in H1FY’22 (Apr-Sept’21) increased 43% over CPLY.

NMDC’s current EC limit is 51.9 mn t and plans are afoot to expand it to 83 mn t.
