- Odisha govt grants Nalco 50-year lease
- Damanjodi 5th refinery stream to add 1 mnt capacity
Nalco is set to commence operations at its Pottangi bauxite mines in Odisha by June 2026, marking a major step in strengthening its raw material security and boosting alumina production. The company is expanding its Damanjodi alumina refinery with the addition of a fifth stream, which will increase capacity by 1 million tonnes per annum (mnt/year) over the existing 2.275 mnt/year setup. To support this expansion, the Odisha government has granted Nalco a 50-year mining lease covering nearly 698 hectares at the Pottangi deposit, ensuring long-term access to high-quality bauxite.
Until mining begins, Nalco will rely on an alternate sourcing project, including a new downhill conveyor system capable of transporting around 3 mnt of bauxite annually, expected to be commissioned by April–May 2026. These developments reinforce Nalco’s integrated aluminium operations and position the company for stronger growth in the domestic and export markets.
