- Exemption valid for shipments until Sep’26
- Move aims to ease import constraints, delays
India has granted a temporary exemption from mandatory input adherence to select Indian Standards (IS 6911, IS 5522, IS 15997) for stainless steel flat product imports, providing relief to importers and downstream users. The exemption applies to shipments with bill of lading dated on or before 30 September 2026.
The move comes in response to industry representations and is expected to ease import bottlenecks, ensuring smoother raw material availability for stainless steel processors and service centres. Market participants indicated that compliance-related delays had been impacting procurement cycles and working capital efficiency.
The exemption is likely to improve import flows, particularly from key suppliers, and may stabilise domestic availability in the near term. Traders expect improved liquidity in flat products, while mills may face increased competition from imported material.
