India: MCL crosses 146 mnt-mark in coal dispatches, surpasses FY’21 record

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), the Coal India subsidiary operating out of Odisha, has recorded cumulative dispatches at 146.37 mnt (as on 1 Feb’22) in the ongoing fiscal FY’22 (Apr’21-Mar’22), thereby crossing the previous fiscal’s total of 146 mnt.

The company accounts for more than one-fourth of CIL’s overall coal supply and has been the leading performer amongst the subsidiaries.

Notably, MCL’s cumulative dispatches so far are higher by around 18 mnt compared to those of the second placed-South Eastern Coalfields (SECL). On the production front, the company’s total output as on 1 Feb’22 was 135.02 mnt, higher by around 28 mnt compared to that of SECL.

New milestone in sight

Dented by Covid-led slow-down, CIL’s annual coal dispatches fell for the past two fiscals. However, MCL had managed to post a y-o-y rise in dispatches in FY’21 by emerging as the largest coal supplier. Incidentally, this was its highest ever dispatches recorded in a fiscal period.

Driven by robust demand from the power sector, the company has dispatched an average of 0.48 mnt/day of coal in the current fiscal, which is almost 19% higher over the levels seen in the previous fiscal.

At this rate, the company is certain to breach the 150 mnt-mark in coal dispatches this fiscal year, thereby becoming the second subsidiary of CIL to attain this feat. Previously, SECL had attained 156.08 mnt dispatches in FY’19.
