Indian steel major JSW Steel sourced 1.47 million tonnes (mn t) of iron ore from the merchant market in Sept’21. The sourcing increased by 8% as against 1.37 mn t seen in Aug’21. The figures exclude captive iron ore sourcing.
For Jul-Sept’21, the company’s average capacity utilisation at the standalone level was 91%, SteelMint learned from the company’s recent press release.
The Vijayanagar works had a scheduled shutdown for campaign repairs of two of its converters and the Salem works shut down one of its blast furnaces, keeping capacity utilisation averaging 91% for the quarter.
Sourcing from Odisha fall 76% m-o-m in Sept’21
The steelmaker procured 10,052 tonnes (t) of iron ore from Odisha-based merchant miners in Sept’21, a sharp decrease of 76% as compared to 73,212 t in Aug’21. Key suppliers were Prakash Industries, Essel and Rungta Mines. The sourcing includes procurement of ore for Bhushan Power and Steel.
Sourcing from NMDC Chhattisgarh down in Sept’21
JSW Steel’s (Dolvi) sourcing from NMDC’s Chhattisgarh mines decreased by 12% to 196,350 t as compared to 223,300 t in Aug’21.
Purchases from Karnataka e-auctions up 18% m-o-m
In Sept’21, JSW Steel sourced around 1.27 mn t of iron ore from the Karnataka e-auctions, up by 18% against 1.07 mn t in Aug’21.
Out of this, NMDC supplied 0.45 mn t, contributing around 35% of the total JSW sourcing in Sept’21 and down by 13% against 0.52 mn t in Aug’21. Vedanta stood as the second largest supplier to JSW Steel at 0.39 mn t, up by 13% against the previous month.
JSW Steel’s iron ore imports continue to remain nil
JSW Steel recorded nil imports of iron ore in Sept’21. The company imported 79,540 t of iron ore from Finland in Nov’20.
