Indian steel major JSW Steel sourced 2.23 million tonnes (mn t) of iron ore from the merchant market in Jul’21. The sourcing increased by 34% as against 1.67 mn t seen in Jun’21. The figures exclude captive iron ore sourcing.
For Jul’21, the company’s average capacity utilisation was 92%, SteelMint learned from the company’s recent press release.
JSW Steel’s crude steel production for Jul’21 was at 1.38 mn t, increasing marginally as compared to 1.34 mn t seen a month ago. The production of flat rolled products dipped 1% to 0.93 mn t. JSW reported a decrease in flat steel production due to the planned shutdown of one of the converters at the Vijayanagar works.
In addition, the company’s production in the long category was at 0.3 mn t, up 28% from 0.24 mn t in Jul’20.
Sourcing from Odisha spurts 39% m-o-m in Jul’21
The steelmaker procured 0.68 mn t of iron ore from Odisha-based merchant miners in Jul’21, up 39% as compared to 0.49 t in Jun’21. Key suppliers were Prakash Industries, Essel and Rungta Mines.
Sourcing from NMDC (Chhattisgarh) up in Jul’21
JSW Steel’s (Dolvi) sourcing from NMDC increased by 30% to 250,250 t as compared with 192,500 t in Jun’21. NMDC has reduced the iron ore prices for Jul’21 deliveries by INR 200-230/t ($3).
Purchases from Karnataka e-auctions up 31% m-o-m
In Jul’21, JSW Steel sourced around 1.3 mn t of iron ore from the Karnataka e-auctions, up by 31% against 0.99 mn t in Jun’21.
Out of this 1.3 mn t, NMDC supplied 0.48 mn t, up by 14% against 0.42 mn t in Jun’21. It contributed around 36% of the total JSW sourcing. Vedanta stood as the second-largest supplier to JSW Steel at 0.35 mn t against 0.21 mn t in the previous month.
JSW Steel’s iron ore imports continue to remain nil
JSW Steel’s iron ore imports stood at nil for Jul’21. JSW Steel imported 79,540 t of iron ore from Finland in Nov’20.
