India: JSW Dolvi Plant Orders Transportable Desulfurization Equipment from Nippon Steel

India’s largest private steel manufacturer JSW Steel has ordered mobile desulfurization equipment from Japan’s Nippon Steel. According to reports provided by Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metals & Engineering Company, JSW Steel has ordered the desulfurization equipment which is highly essential in the production of high-grade steel.

This desulfurization equipment is highly essential in the hot metal treatment process in order to achieve stable and efficient production of high-grade steel. JSW might have ordered this equipment looking at its use in all 3 groups of JSW Steel in India for catering the high-grade steel demand in the country which is likely to expand sharply in future.

Notably, the 5 MTPA integrated steel plant at Dolvi is advantageously located on the West coast of Maharashtra. JSW Dolvi Works is India’s first to adopt a combination of Conarc Technology for both steel-making and compact strip production (CSP), aiding the production of hot rolled coils. From automotive and industrial to consumer durables, Dolvi manufactures products that meet the needs of companies across sectors. By 2025, JSW Steel aims to produce 40 million tons of steel annually.

How can this equipment improve the desulfurization?

In order to promote the desulfurization reaction in the refractory facility, the mixing of hot metal and desulfurization agent is done through mechanical rotating of blades (impellers). The impeller can be rotated at high speed to promote desulfurization reaction efficiently. Also, it is possible to use inexpensive lime rather than expensive magnesium as a desulfurizing agent, which can reduce the operating costs by about 45%.

Few more advantages of this equipment –

Portability – The company having its facilities at different regions of the country can easily transport the equipment at various locations and it can be used accordingly. This provides an advantage of reducing equipment costs as the same equipment can be used instead of installing a new equipment at each plant, shortening operating time as it can be operated parallelly for desulfurization.

Furthermore, mobile layout flexibility increases availability to match the constraints of the space at plant. It provides selectively for fixed layout plant to operate with the space constraints.

Generates less vibrations – In addition to these features, the equipment is highly evaluated to cause very little trouble, such as vibration by the unique design approach based on many years of experience and know-how from the experienced team of Nippon Steel.

Once this equipment will get into operation, it will provide JSW delivery facilities to increase their processing volumes by upto 45 heat cycles per day. Considering 365 MT of production per heat cycle the processing amount can be reached upto 16,425 MT per day at JSW’s Vijayanagar plant in Southern India.
