India: Jabalpur High Court’s Verdict to remove 2 Coal Blocks from Schedule II

On 12 Feb’15, the Jabalpur High Court has directed the Centre to pull out two coal blocks, which were put on 1st stage of auction.

Today, the coal blocks auction have taken another track, when Jabalpur High Court has passed an order to remove two coal blocks namely Gotitoria East and Gotitoria West (MP) from the auction of Schedule II (23 operational mines). The court has also asked the government to withdraw the change in end-use.

Earlier, both the mines were allotted to BLA group for steel plants. The company had filed a petition to challenge the change in end-use of blocks from steel to power.

Coal Secretary stated, “In respect to Delhi and Jabalpur HC’s verdict, Gotitoria East, Gotitoria West and the rest three blocks have been put on hold. So, these coal blocks will not be auctioned in the present schedule.”

Till the date, five blocks have been removed on the basis of High Court judgment and 10 coal mines are under litigation in various courts.

Meanwhile, the government announced that total 176 bidders have applied for the auction of schedule II, out of which 134 were found technically qualified. While, 48 have qualified for power and 86 for steel & cement sector collectively.
