India: Iron Ore Imports Stable in FY17

Indian iron ore imports were registered at 5.79 MnT in FY17 with a marginal increase 3% Y-o-Y. The quantity imported last fiscal was 5.62 MnT.

Mar’17 have seen a significant growth of 92% M-o-M but came to near half at 0.43 MnT with 45% down Y-o-Y as it was at 0.78 MnT last year for the same month. The quantity imported in Feb’17 was 0.22 MnT.India Iron Ore Imports, India, Iron Ore, ImportsShipper-wise Import:
West India based and few steel units from south-India imported South African lump. JSW Steel imported pellet feed primarily from Brazil.

JSW Steel remained the largest importer in FY17 and imported 3.55 MnT iron ore which was procured under its hedging contract followed by Jindal SAW at 0.41 MnT and Essar Steel at 0.32 MnT.India Iron Ore Imports, India, Iron Ore, ImportsCountry-wise Import:
Brazil accounted for 56% share in Indian iron ore imports for FY17 followed by South Africa which had 40% share of imports.

Port-wise Import:
Jaigarh was the port that imported largest in FY-17 with 3.38 MnT material for the fiscal followed by Krishnapatnam with 0.62 MnT of quantity in the FY17.
