- IMFA’s ferro chrome capacity to reach 484,000 t/year in FY’27
Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) has commenced the first tapping of hot metal from the first furnace at its greenfield ferro chrome project in Kalinganagar, Odisha, on 25 August 2026. This marks a key milestone in the company’s capacity expansion plans.
The furnace load will be gradually ramped up, with a more significant volume of ferro chrome production expected from September 2026. Commissioning activities for the project’s second furnace are also expected to begin in September.
Once operational, the project will increase IMFA’s installed ferro chrome capacity from 384,000 t/year to 484,000 t/year in FY’27, while the company has set a longer-term target of 534,000 t/year. In Q1FY’27, its ferro chrome production rose by 22% y-o-y to 80,690 t, compared with 65,929 t in Q1FY’26. On a q-o-q basis, output increased by 18% from 68,506 t in Q4FY’26.
The additional capacity is expected to strengthen domestic ferro chrome availability and add to competition among Indian producers as new volumes enter the market.
