- Southern markets weaken as Chennai, Coimbatore prices fall by INR 800/t
- Need-based buying keeps foundry scrap prices broadly stable elsewhere
Foundry scrap market sentiment in India remained broadly stable w-o-w as of 28 July 2026. Demand from the automotive and engineering casting sectors stayed steady, while buying interest was largely need-based, limiting any meaningful price movement. Plate scrap values were mostly unchanged across major markets; however, Chennai and Coimbatore saw a decline of about INR 800/t amid weak procurement activity and continued softness in steel prices across southern India.
Regional price commentary
Kolhapur (West India)
Kolhapur market sentiment remained stable w-o-w, with foundry plate (4-8 mm) priced unchanged at INR 38,200/t and Low Mn CR-busheling steady at INR 42,000/t. Market activity was balanced, with buying largely requirement-based and limited availability of prime-grade scrap keeping prices supported.
Kolkata (East India)
Kolkata saw a mild uptick in sentiment, as foundry plate (4-8 mm) prices rose INR 100/t w-o-w to INR 38,900/t. The increase was supported by an improvement in semi-finished steel prices in the previous session, which helped lend some firmness to local scrap values.
Coimbatore (South India)
Coimbatore remained under pressure, with foundry plate (8-50 mm) prices declining INR 800/t to INR 38,000/t, while low manganese CR-busheling stayed unchanged at INR 44,500/t. Weak demand and cautious buying continued to weigh on market sentiment in the region.
Chennai (South India)
Chennai also witnessed soft sentiment, as foundry plate (8-50 mm) prices eased INR 800/t w-o-w to INR 36,000/t and low manganese CR-busheling remained flat at INR 42,500/t. Buying interest stayed subdued, reflecting a cautious procurement approach and weaker market conditions in the region.
Outlook
India’s foundry scrap market is expected to remain largely stable over the coming week, supported by balanced availability and steady demand from the automotive and engineering casting sectors. However, weak steel prices and cautious procurement in southern India may continue to exert pressure on regional scrap prices, particularly in Chennai and Coimbatore, unless buying activity improves.
