- Supply tightness continues to push up Kolkata’s prices
- Restocking by automotive foundries lifts prices in south
Foundry scrap prices in India remained firm w-o-w as of 4 February 2026, supported by stable offtake from automotive and engineering casting segments. Buying activity remained measured, with foundries continuing need-based procurement amid comfortable inventory positions. Price strength was more pronounced in western and southern India, while other regions saw limited movement.
Western India: Kolhapur sees mixed trends
In Kolhapur, plate-cutting scrap prices held steady at INR 36,500/tonne (t), reflecting balanced supply-demand conditions. However, CR-busheling (low Mn, bundled) prices rose by INR 200/t w-o-w to INR 39,700/t. Market participants pointed out that consistent dispatches to auto-component and tractor foundries prevented any downside, even as buyers refrained from aggressive stocking. The plate-cutting price curve through late January into early February indicates a gradual recovery after December softness, reinforcing a stabilising market tone.
Southern India: Chennai’s prices inch up; Coimbatore steady
Chennai saw modest gains, with plate-cutting scrap (LS and LP, loose) increasing by INR 200/t to INR 36,400/t, while CR-busheling moved up by INR 150/t to INR 39,400/t. Traders attributed the uptick to routine restocking by automotive foundries. In Coimbatore, prices remained unchanged, with plate-cutting at INR 37,900/t and CR-busheling at INR 40,900/t, as adequate scrap availability capped further upside.
Eastern India: Kolkata edges up
Kolkata plate-cutting prices inched up by INR 100/t to INR 37,100/t. Participants noted that earlier supply tightness continues to support elevated levels.
Outlook
Foundry scrap prices are expected to stay firm next week, backed by steady casting demand. However, any sharp upside will likely depend on tighter scrap availability or a stronger pick-up in casting orders.
