India: Finished steel imports down 36% m-o-m in Jul’25 – JPC

  • Steel output remains firm, consumption steady
  • Imports decline but exports rise nearly 9% on-month 

India’s finished steel imports dropped by 35.9% m-o-m to 0.282 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025, compared with 0.440 mnt in June, as per Joint Plant Committee (JPC) data under the Ministry of Steel. Y-o-y, imports fell by 65.3% from 0.812 mnt in July 2024.

Cumulative imports in April-July stood at 1.666 mnt, down 39.6% against 2.756 mnt in the same period last year

Finished steel exports post m-o-m gain
India’s finished steel exports rose by 8.7% m-o-m to 0.485 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025, up from 0.446 mnt in June. On a y-o-y basis, exports surged 64.4% from 0.295 mnt in July 2024.
Cumulative exports during April–July 2025 stood at 1.698 mnt, up 8% from 1.573 mnt in the same period last year.

Crude steel output records growth
According to JPC, crude steel output remained flat m-o-m at 13.599 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025.On a y-o-y basis, production rose 10.7% from 12.282 mnt in July 2024.

Cumulative output during April–July 2025 reached 54.192 mnt, reflecting an 11.1% increase from 48.797 mnt in the same period last year. The trend indicates a stable supply base, supporting market availability.

Finished steel output up m-o-m
Provisional JPC data shows finished steel production rose 0.8% m-o-m to 13.043 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025, up from 12.936 mnt in June. On a y-o-y basis, output was 10.8% higher compared to 11.770 mnt in July 2024.
Cumulative production during April-July 2025 stood at 51.456 mnt, marking an 8.8% rise over 47.278 mnt in the same period last year. Steady production momentum suggests a firm supply outlook, supporting both domestic and export demand.

Finished steel consumption stable m-o-m
Consumption of finished steel remained nearly flat m-o-m, registering 13.115 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025, down marginally by 0.5% from 13.178 mnt in June. On a y-o-y basis, consumption rose 6.6% from 12.303 mnt in July 2024.
Cumulative consumption during April-July 2025 reached 51.455 mnt, up 7.5% from 47.847 mnt a year ago. While monthly demand remained steady, the y-o-y growth reflects sustained consumption support.

Outlook
India’s steel market remained stable in July 2025, backed by strong crude and finished steel output and a steady demand environment. Exports gained momentum on improved global competitiveness, while imports fell sharply, indicating a shift towards domestic sourcing.

With robust supply, stable consumption, and improving trade dynamics, the market is expected to stay balanced. Post-monsoon demand recovery and export momentum could further support the sector in the coming months.
