India: Ferro vanadium prices rise slightly w-o-w; global supply risks contrast with weak demand

  • Environmental checks in Sichuan raise concerns over Chinese vanadium output
  • Weak special steel mill tenders, lower vanadium pentoxide prices limit further gains

Indian ferro vanadium (FeV 50%) prices edged up w-o-w to INR 1,275,000/t ($13,311/t) on 21 October 2026. The increase came amid conflicting market signals, as supply concerns in China offered potential price support while subdued steel-mill buying and falling vanadium pentoxide prices pointed to limited upside.

Chinese production risks reshape seller expectations

Environmental checks in Sichuan have raised concerns over Chinese vanadium production, adding a supply-side risk to the global market outlook. However, the latest market indicators remain mixed: vanadium pentoxide prices in China fell 2.81% to $4.84/lb on 21 October, suggesting that supply concerns have not translated into uninterrupted price gains across the value chain. For Indian participants, this divergence makes global price movements an important reference point, although domestic offers will also depend on local availability and procurement requirements.

Weak special steel mill tenders limit upside potential

Slower vanadium trading activity and weak special steel mill tender participation in China limited price gains in India. Additionally, domestic demand remained weak. This remained significant for Indian ferro vanadium suppliers because international price support alone may not generate stronger buying interest from domestic special-steel manufacturers. If steel mills continue to defer fresh procurement or limit purchases to immediate requirements, the recent Indian price increase could face resistance, a key seller told BigMint. The market will therefore need stronger downstream buying, rather than supply concerns alone, to sustain upward momentum.

Outlook

Indian ferro vanadium prices may remain sensitive to Chinese supply developments, but weaker vanadium pentoxide prices and subdued steel-mill buying could limit further gains. Domestic procurement trends will remain crucial.
