India extends QCO exemptions for stainless steel flat products until 31 Mar’26

  • Tight domestic supply of 200, 300 series cited as reason
  • Ministry states QCO compliance posed immediate challenges

India’s Ministry of Steel has extended exemptions under the Quality Control Order (QCO) for stainless steel flat products, offering critical relief to importers and downstream consumers amid ongoing capacity ramp-up within the domestic industry.

The Ministry noted that many stakeholders had already made substantial advance payments to overseas mills for 200- and 300-series stainless steel flat products, whereas domestic availability remains limited and compliance with IS 6911, IS 5522, and IS 15997 had posed immediate challenges.

To address these concerns and ensure uninterrupted market supply, the exemption — earlier applicable for shipments loaded on or before 31 December 2025 — has now been extended to 31 March 2026, providing additional flexibility for importers while domestic producers continue scaling up output.
