India: Essar Projects to Supply Equipment for SAIL

Minerals & Metals business unit of Essar Projects, a subsidiary of Essar Steel, has erected testing & commission equipment for basic oxygen furnace and continuous casting plant at Bhilai Steel Plant (subsidiary of SAIL) in Chhattisgarh.

The contract worth INR 85 crore has been awarded by SAIL. This order follows a contract awarded by SAIL for its Rourkela plant in Odisha last year.

The basic oxygen furnace would comprise of three converters, while the continuous casting plant would comprise of four casters—two billet casters, one billet-cum-bloom caster and one beam blank caster.

The project involves erection of equipment of around 47,500 MnT be completed within 14 months. The agreement was signed between EPIL & SAIL on 12 Mar, 2014.

Meanwhile, the infrastructure asset of the company has been awarded with INR 392 crore order for execution of a hydroelectric project in Sikkim. Himagiri Hydro Energy is implementing the proposed 300 MW Panan HEP project. The project is expected to complete in two years.

The project consists of a 98 m high concrete gravity dam, two de-silting chambers, about 10 km of head race tunnel, a 90 m deep surge shaft and a surface power house to house four 75 MW turbines to generate 300 MW of electricity. Commenting on the award win Priti Patel, Head-Hydro & Metros of Essar Projects India said, “It is a large project and there are specific components which will give us high prequalification and expertise.”

The scope of work envisages river diversion arrangements, concrete gravity dam, underground de-silting chambers, silt flushing tunnel, head race tunnel, underground surge shaft, underground pressure shafts, valve chamber, vertical penstocks, surface power house, and a tail race channel.

The proposed project is the 3rd project for Essar in the hydro power sector—the first two being Pallivasal hydel power extension project in Kerala and the 2×30 MW Tuirial hydel power project in the North Eastern state of Mizoram.
