India: ERW patra pipe prices gain amid rise in raw material prices

ERW patra pipe prices (41-60 OD) rose in the week ended 5 December, in Raipur and Mandi Gobindgarh, boosted by rising prices of raw materials. However, prices remained unchanged on a d-o-d basis in both Raipur and Mandi Gobindgarh on Friday.

Current steel prices stand at INR 39,500/t in Raipur and INR 42,300/t in Mandi Gobindgarh. Listed prices are ex-works (exw), excluding 18% GST.

ERW patra pipe prices in Mandi Gobindgarh and Raipur have been moving upward since the start of the week, even though demand for finished goods remains sluggish; in contrast, the raw‑material segment is experiencing strong demand, which has driven price increases.

“Regional buyers are optimistic that prices will improve in the near term, even as they anticipate a possible dip later”. Another local source notes that, “demand is stronger for raw materials than for finished products”. While a reliable source from the same area adds that, “buyers are importing finished goods from other states to benefit from lower prices,” a Mandi‑based source told BigMint.

Weekly prices:

Both Raipur and Mandi Gobindgarh reported a price increase this week.

Raipur: Prices rose by INR 500/t w-o-w, reaching INR 39,500/t Exw-Raipur on 5 December from INR 39,000/t on 28 November. Trade volumes of around 1,500 t were recorded this week, indicating low regional demand and a need‑based buying pattern.

Mandi: Prices increased by INR 200/t w-o-w to INR 42,300/t Exw-Mandi Gobindgarh on 5 December from INR 42,100/t a week ago. This week’s trading activity in patra‑based pipes amounted to roughly 1,000 tonnes, reflecting weak bookings and subdued demand.

Raw materials price impact:

HR strip (patra) prices in Raipur increased by INR 400/t w-o-w to INR 39,000/t Exw-Raipur against INR 38,600/t on 28 November. Moreover, patra prices in Mandi increased by INR 200/t w-o-w to INR 41,300/t Exw-Mandi Gobindgarh against INR 41,100/t on 28 November.

Billet prices in Raipur rose by INR 850/t w-o-w to INR 37,000/t Exw-Raipur on 5 December from INR 36,150/t the previous week. Moreover, prices in Mandi Gobindgarh stood at INR 40,750/t Exw-Mandi Gobindgarh, up by INR 600/t w-o-w as compared to INR 40,150/t on 28 November.

Outlook

ERW patra pipe prices are likely to remain firm in December, driven by sustained strength and optimism in the raw material segment, despite sluggish demand for finished pipes. While prices held stable d-o-d on December 5, the weekly upward momentum suggests near-term stability. However, the weak finished goods demand and reports of importing cheaper alternatives pose a potential risk to a sustained high price trajectory.
