India: Electricity Sales through Short Term Transaction Up 8% Y-o-Y in Jan’19

Sales of electricity through short term transaction has recorded a growth 8% Y-o-Y to 10.427 BU (Billion Units) in Jan’19 compared with 9.69 BU Jan’18, as per the data provided by CERC.

Sales had, however, decreased 11% on the month from 11.75 BU in Dec’18, weighted down by a slight fall in power demand.

Net power generation excluding generation from renewable and captive power plants was recorded at 100.359 BU in Jan’19, falling from 100.537 BU in Dec’18.

Volume of Short-term Transactions:

Short-term transaction accounted for 10% of the total electricity produced in Jan’19.

Of the total short-term transactions in CY18, bilateral constitutes 46% followed by 31% through transactions on power exchanges and remaining 23% through DSM.

Transaction through bilateral contracts and DSM fell 19% and 16% on the month, marked at 4797.28 MU and 2348.85 MU respectively in Jan’19. On the other hand, transactions on power exchanges increased 7% M-o-M to 3280.86 MU.

Price of Short-term Transactions of Electricity:
Average sale price across all the modes of electricity transactions had gone up during Jan’19.

The weighted average price of electricity transacted through bilateral contracts was INR 4.44/kWh, up 2% on the month from INR 4.34/ kWh.

The weighted average price of electricity transacted through IEX was INR 3.63/kWh. There were no transactions in PXIL.

Average price of electricity transacted through DSM had witnessed significant rise of 59% on the month to INR 3.48/kWh.

During the month, top 5 electricity selling regional entities were Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Semb Corp Gayatri Power and Essar Power. Top 5 electricity purchasing regional entities were Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.
