India: ECL sells 180,000 t of non-coking coal in auctions till date in Oct’25

  • G4 and G13 grades lead sales on steady industrial demand
  • Mid- to high-grade coal continues to attract firm bids

Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) conducted two spot e-auctions on 7 and 14 October 2025, collectively selling 177,000 tonnes (t) of non-coking coal across multiple grades. Strong participation from industrial buyers and traders kept bidding momentum steady, led by firm demand for G4 and G13 grades.

7 October auction

The 7 October auction recorded total sales of 45,400 t, dominated by G4 coal from Jhanjra UG and Nakrakonda OC mines. G4 averaged INR 4,493/t, while small parcels of G3 (9,750 t at INR 4,638/t) and G9 (7,950 t at INR 1,772/t) were also booked. Key buyers included Mark Trading Company and Khatu Shyam Steels (5,000 t each of G4), S.S. Enterprises (2,400 t), and Laxmi Narayan Enterprises (1,700 t).

14 October auction

ECL’s second auction on 14 October witnessed larger participation, with 131,550 t booked. G13 and G4 were the most traded grades, contributing 86,150 t and 18,250 t, respectively. G13 fetched an average bid of INR 1,713/t, while G4 averaged INR 4,460/t. Adani Power Ltd emerged as the leading buyer with 75,000 t of G13 from Rajmahal OC, followed by Shivoy Infratech Pvt Ltd (4,000 t) and Jaiswal Brothers (3,000 t). Supplies were sourced from multiple collieries, including Rajmahal OC, Chitra OC, and Shankarpur UG.

Market insight

The October results indicate steady buying interest for mid- to high-grade coal, particularly G4, supported by consistent offtake from industrial consumers. ECL has scheduled its next e-auction on 25 October, offering 183,350 t of non-coking coal across grades and mines.
