India: ECL, SECL schedule fresh non-coking coal e-auctions

• SECL auction to facilitate greater availability of lower grades 
• Both auctions provide a mix of road and rail evacuation

Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) have scheduled fresh e-auctions for non-coking coal in August. ECL will conduct its auction on 27 August, offering 233,050 t, while SECL has scheduled its auction for 31 August with 1,038,300 t on offer.

ECL offers 233,050 t

ECL’s offering covers G3, G4, G5, G9 and W04 grades. G9 accounts for the largest share at 104,000 t, all from the Salanpur C cluster, with a notified price of INR 1,776/t.

G4 follows with 110,800 t, spread across several loading points and clusters. The notified price for G4 is INR 3,557/t. G3 has 7,000 t at INR 3,719/t, while G5 has 5,250 t at INR 3,275/t.

W04 accounts for 6,000 t, offered from Khoodia, Shyampur B, Badjna, Hariajam and Kumardhubi, at INR 2,890/t. The notice shows both road and rail evacuation across different ECL sources.

SECL’s offering crosses 1 mnt 

SECL’s auction is substantially larger, with 1,038,300 t offered across G3, G6, G8, G9, G11, G13, G14 and G15 grades.

G14 dominates the catalogue with 500,000 t from Baroud mine and silo, carrying a modulated price of INR 930/t. G15 adds 200,000 t from Chhal Silo at INR 737/t, while G11 accounts for 138,000 t from Chhal and Jagannathpur mines at INR 1,184/t.

G9 contributes 80,000 t from Jagannathpur at INR 1,506/t. G6 offers 42,000 t, while G8 contributes 28,000 t. Smaller offerings include 50,000 t of G13 from Saraipalli and 300 t of G3 from Bagdewa underground mine. The SECL notice lists road and rail modes across the different clusters.

Different supply focus

The two catalogues show different supply mixes. ECL’s offering is concentrated in G4 and G9, which together account for around 92% of its total quantity. SECL’s offering is dominated by G14 and G15, together representing around 67% of its total.

The large SECL catalogue provides greater availability of lower-grade coal, while ECL’s offering provides a comparatively larger share of G4 and G9 material. Both auctions provide a mix of road and rail evacuation options depending on the source and loading point.
