- G13 ROM emerges as the largest auction segment
- Premium G3-G5 coal offered in limited quantities
Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) has notified 714,750 tonnes (t) of coal for its e-auction scheduled on 13 July 2026, comprising steam and run-of-mine (ROM) coal across multiple mines and clusters. The auction covers grades ranging from G3 to G13, with dispatch through both road and rail modes.
ROM coal dominates the auction
ROM coal accounts for the largest share of the auction, led by 382,300 t of G13 ROM (-50 mm) from Rajmahal OC, offered through the road mode at a notified price of INR 1,716/t. Another 95,600 t of G12 ROM (-50 mm) has been offered from Hura C OC through the road mode at a notified price of INR 1,801/t. Together, these two offerings account for nearly three-fourths of the total auction quantity.
G11 steam coal dominates auction volumes
The Rajmahal cluster has offered 81,000 t of G11 steam (-250 mm) coal from Rajmahal OC through the road mode at a notified price of INR 2,154/t. Similarly, the Hura C cluster has notified 83,350 t of G11 steam (-100 mm) coal from Hura C OC, also through the road mode at the same notified price.
G9 steam coal offered under Salanpur C cluster
The Salanpur C cluster has offered 44,000 t of G9 steam (-100 mm) coal, comprising 40,000 t from Gourandih Begunia OC through the road mode and 4,000 t from Dalmiya Siding via rail. The notified price for the grade stands at INR 1,776/t.
Premium G3-G5 steam coal available in limited volumes
The Mugma E cluster has notified 6,000 t of G5 steam coal, including 2,000 t from Rajpura OC through the road mode and 4,000 t through rail, at a notified price of INR 3,275/t.
Meanwhile, the Kajora A cluster has offered 9,000 t of G3 steam coal, comprising 5,000 t from Jambad UG through the road mode and 4,000 t from UKA-II-MSPE via rail. The notified price for the grade is INR 3,719/t.
G4 coal offered from multiple clusters and standalone mines
The New Kenda OC (H) cluster has offered 6,000 t of G4 steam coal, including 2,000 t from New Kenda OC through the road mode and 4,000 t from MCSP/Pure Jambad Siding via rail. The Satgram-Sripur D cluster has notified 5,000 t, comprising 1,000 t from Bhanora OC (Charanpur) Patch through the road mode and 4,000 t from JNCN via rail. The rail quantity will be sourced from Satgram Incline UG, Satgram Project UG, Chapuikhas UG, JK Nagar UG, Pure Searsole UG, Bhanora West Block UG, and Bhanora OC (Charanpur).
In addition, ECL has offered standalone road-mode G4 steam coal from Parascole (W) UG offer 1,000 t, Dhemo Main Pit UG offer 500 t and Narsamuda 1,000 t. All G4 offerings carry a notified price of INR 3,557/t, while the W04 coal offered through MMU IIIA/PMCS is notified at INR 2,890/t.
Road mode continues to dominate dispatch
Road transportation accounts for the overwhelming majority of the auction quantity, particularly for the large-volume offerings from Rajmahal OC, Hura C OC, Gourandih Begunia OC, Rajpura OC and Jambad UG. Rail dispatch is available for selected G3, G4, G5 and G9 steam coal lots through designated sidings, providing additional evacuation options for bulk consumers.
Market implication
Recent auction trends indicate that buyer interest is likely to remain concentrated in premium-grade steam coal. G3, G4 and G5 grades have consistently attracted healthy premiums over their notified prices, reflecting sustained demand from industrial consumers for higher calorific-value coal. Although these grades account for only a small share of the upcoming auction volume, their limited availability is expected to support competitive bidding.
In contrast, lower-grade G11 steam and G12-G13 ROM coal dominate the auction catalogue, with Rajmahal OC and Hura C OC contributing the bulk of the volumes. These grades have largely cleared at their notified prices in recent auctions despite improved allocations, suggesting comfortable availability and measured buying interest. As a result, buyers are expected to continue procuring lower-grade coal on a need-based basis, while competition is likely to remain stronger for the limited premium-grade offerings.
