India: ECL non-coking coal auction sees selective buying; G4 dominates allocations again

  • G4 coal dominates allocations with 83,500 t cleared in the auction
  • Sonepur Bazari OC records highest mine allocation at 35,000 t

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) conducted its non-coking coal e-auction on 7 March 2026, offering 1.46 mnt across multiple grades. However, allocations remained limited at 118,200 t, indicating cautious participation despite the sizeable notified quantity.

G4 dominates allocations

Mid-grade G4 coal accounted for the largest share, with 83,500 t allocated at an average INR 4,888/t. Sonepur Bazari OC led allocations with 35,000 t cleared at INR 5,622/t, followed by Jhanjra UG (10,000 t at INR 4,592/t), New Kenda OC (8,000 t at INR 4,459/t), and Kumardihi B UG (8,000 t at INR 4,463/t).

Other mines included Bhanora OC (7,000 t at INR 5,259/t), Khottadih UG (5,750 t at INR 4,437/t) and Kumardihi A UG (5,000 t at INR 4,478/t). Smaller parcels were also cleared from Nimcha UG, Dhemo Main Pit UG, Narsamuda UG, Porascole (W) UG, and Methani UG, with prices ranging between INR 4,599–6,509/t.

Other grade allocations

G5 coal totalled 14,700 t at an average INR 4,628/t, largely from North Searsole OC (12,000 t), followed by Chora Block Inc UG (2,200 t) and Bejdih UG (500 t). Higher-CV G3 coal recorded 5,000 t of allocations from Chitra OC at INR 5,960/t.

Lower-CV G11 coal totalled 4,850 t at INR 2,151/t, mainly from Hura C OC (4,050 t) and Rajmahal OC (800 t). Further, G12 coal recorded 1,900 t at INR 1,798/t, entirely from Hura C OC, while W04 grade coal saw 800 t allocated from Nirsa OC and Badjna UG at INR 3,604/t.

Buyer participation

Buyer participation was led by Shakambhari Ispat & Power Limited, which secured 25,000 t of G4 coal, making it the largest buyer in the auction. Iconic Coal Company lifted 8,550 t, including 7,450 t of G4 and 1,100 t of G5.

Other key participants included Neelkanth Sales and Logistics (5,250 t), Saroj Commodities Pvt Ltd (5,150 t) and Ranisati Coal Carriers Pvt Ltd (4,000 t), largely across G4 parcels. Additional allocations were recorded by Janakpur Tradelink Pvt Ltd (3,550 t), Mark Trading Company (3,500 t) and Laxmi Narayan Enterprises (3,100 t).

Smaller volumes were secured by Khemka Minerals Pvt Ltd (2,700 t) and RCB Minerals Pvt Ltd (1,800 t) across G4, G5 and G11 grades.

Market insight

The auction reflected selective procurement behaviour, with buyers focusing mainly on G4 parcels from major mines rather than participating across all grades. Despite 1.46 mnt being offered, allocations remained relatively low at 118,200 t, indicating need-based procurement and cautious buying sentiment among market participants.
