India: ECL, NCL line up over 1 mnt of non-coking coal for auctions on 11 Jun’26

  • Rajmahal mines dominate ECL volumes
  • Road mode leads coal offerings

Coal India subsidiaries, Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), are scheduled to auction more than 1 million tonnes (mnt) of non-coking coal on 11 June 2026, offering a wide range of grades through both road and rail modes.

Rajmahal region accounts for bulk of ECL volumes

ECL accounts for the bulk of the offering with nearly 0.8 mnt of coal. The auction is heavily concentrated in the Rajmahal region, where Rajmahal OC and Hura C OC together contribute more than 0.78 mnt through road mode.

Rajmahal OC is offering 90,700 t of G11 steam coal and 499,000 tonnes of G13 ROM coal, while Hura C OC is supplying 93,400 t of G11 steam coal and 99,600 t of G12 ROM coal, all through road dispatches.

Multiple G4 and G5 lots on offer

Beyond Rajmahal, ECL has included G4-grade steam coal from several mines, including Chitra OC, New Kenda OC (H), Bhanora OC (Charanpur Patch), Kalidaspur UG, Narsamuda, Porascole (W) UG and Dhemo Main Pit UG. Rail-linked G4 coal is also available from New Kenda OC and Chitra OC through dedicated sidings.

The auction basket further comprises G9 steam coal from Gourandih Begunia OC under the Salanpur cluster and G5-grade coal from Rajpura OC in the Mugma area. A W04-grade rail-linked lot has also been included, providing additional options for bulk consumers.

Steam coal dominates ECL basket

Steam coal forms the majority of ECL’s offering, with coal sizes ranging from (-)100 mm to (-)250 mm. The portfolio also includes ROM coal lots from Rajmahal and Hura C projects. Representative grades on offer include G4, G5, G9, G11, G12, G13 and W04.

Nigahi project leads NCL auction

NCL is set to offer around 224,000 tonnes of coal from its Nigahi and Kakri projects. The Nigahi cluster constitutes the largest share, with 200,000 tonnes of G7-grade coal available through road mode from Nigahi OC. The company is also offering 4,000 tonnes of G10-grade coal through rail mode from Nigahi Silo.

Road mode accounts for majority of NCL supplies

Kakri OC will contribute 20,000 tonnes of G9-grade coal through road mode, taking NCL’s total auction quantity to 224,000 tonnes. Road dispatches account for the overwhelming majority of NCL’s offering, with rail-linked supplies limited to the Nigahi Silo lot.

Wide range of grades available to consumers

Overall, the combined auction provides buyers access to a broad spectrum of non-coking coal grades and transportation options, with road mode dominating the offerings from both subsidiaries. The auction is expected to attract participation from power producers, sponge iron manufacturers and other industrial consumers seeking domestic coal supplies.
