- G4 premiums exceed 200% across several mines
- G3 bidding also remains strong at key sources
Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) allocated 226,050 t in its e-auction held on 30 September 2026, against 279,050 t offered, giving an allocation rate of around 81%. Bidding remained strong for selected G4 and G3 sources, while W04 and G5 saw more varied outcomes. Sonepur Bazari G4 recorded the highest allocated volume and a strong premium.
G4 attracts strong bidding
G4 remained the strongest segment of the auction. Sonepur Bazari recorded a winning price of INR 11,795/t against the notified INR 3,557/t, resulting in a 231.6% premium. Kumardihi B UG and Jhanjra UG also attracted strong premiums of 197.3% and 199.8%, respectively.
Other G4 sources also recorded premiums above 200%, including Belbaid UG at 208.5%, JK Nagar UG at 213.2%, Khottadih OC at 206.3%, Lower Kenda UG at 203.7% and Mandarboni-SS at 206.4%.
Shyamsundarpur was comparatively weaker at a 62.1% premium, while Bahula and Kalidaspur recorded premiums of 193.8% and 187.7%, respectively.
G3 bidding remains firm
G3 also attracted substantial premiums at the selected sources. KhasKajora UG recorded a winning price of INR 12,298/t, translating into a 230.7% premium over the notified INR 3,719/t.
Chitra OC recorded a winning price of INR 10,635/t and a 186.0% premium. Both sources showed strong competition for selected G3 material.
W04 and G5 show mixed results
W04 bidding varied considerably by source. Shyampur B UG recorded a 102.7% premium, while Khoodia UG attracted 99.2% and Badjna UG 88.8%. Dabor OC recorded a 77.2% premium.
At the lower end, Hariajam UG recorded only a 26.5% premium, while Kumardhubi UG attracted 68.6%.
G5 results were also mixed. Siduli UG recorded a winning price of INR 9,184/t, equivalent to a 180.4% premium, while Barmuri OC attracted only 34.9%.

Comparison with 16 September auction
At the grade level, bidding remained strong in the 30 September auction. The weighted average winning price for G3 fell 9.4% to around INR 10,739/t, while G4 declined 1.9% to around INR 10,765/t. G5 was broadly stable, down 0.9% to around INR 7,277/t, while W04 fell 3.7% to around INR 5,249/t.
The 16 September auction had substantial G11, G12 and G13 allocations, while the 30 September auction was focused mainly on G3, G4, G5 and W04. This made the latest auction more concentrated towards higher-grade coal.
Buyer participation
Giridhan Metal was the largest buyer, securing 30,000 t, including 20,000 t G4 and 10,000 t G3. Rungta Mines followed with 27,100 t, comprising 21,450 t G3 and 5,650 t G4. Shyam SEL and Power and Shyam Steel Manufacturing each secured 20,000 t of G4. Satyam Iron & Steel purchased 13,350 t of G4, while Super Smelters secured 10,000 t across G3 and G4.
Overall, the 30 September auction showed strong and selective bidding for G3 and G4 coal, with several sources attracting premiums above 200%. The wide variation between mine-level results continued to show that buyer preference remained source-specific, particularly for higher-grade coal.
