Petroleum industry in India has been adversely affected like other industries due to the present pandemic. The effect has been different on various sub-products due to its application in different sectors.
While crude processing gives the overall effect of capacity utilization of the industry, the production of each sub-product may vary in different proportions depending on the nature of crude processed coupled with its demand and realization in the market. It may also vary for different refineries depending upon the protocols of restrictions imposed in that area by local authorities.
Domestic production of various petroleum coke and other petroleum products for the period Apr-Jan’21 and Apr-Jan’20 is enumerated as follows:

It may be observed that there is reduction of 12.4% on overall basis. ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) was the worst hit in this period losing 57.7%. This is mainly due to grounding of several flights and flying only emergency services during lockdown months and even afterwards during this fiscal year.
The increased production of pet coke has a healthy support from demand by the cement manufactures due to increase in the infrastructural activities within the country. However, the current production is still lower than the prior year and would likely require some more months before reaching at pre-Covid levels.
The percentage share of pet coke and other petroleum products for the period Apr-Jan’21 as compared to corresponding period last year is shown in the abovementioned featured image. It may be observed that pet coke share has decreased from 5.6% during Apr-Jan FY20 to 5.2% in Apr-Jan FY21.
Notably, pet coke is the 4th largest product, based on percentage share, amongst other major petroleum products after diesel (HSD), petrol (MS) and naphtha. HSD (High Speed Diesel) has the largest share amongst all petroleum products. It has improved percentage share to 43.1% this year from 42.4% over last year same period.
