India: Delhi government seeks closure of 10 polluting coal plants

The Delhi government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking closure of 10 coal-fired power plants in the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on an urgent basis. The amended rules allowing thermal power plants to comply with new emission norms by the end of 2022 are causing severe health hazards in the national capital. Earlier, the emissions control system was scheduled to take effect in December 2017.
