As per the tentative report provided by power ministry, Indian power generation from the conventional sources have increased 5% Y-o-Y to 108.046 BU in Sep’18 compared with 102.496 BU in Sep’17.
Power output had hit a 4-month high total in Sep’18, recording a 4% M-o-M growth from 105.793 BU in Aug’18.
Conventional sources include thermal power plants (Coal, diesel and gas plants), Hydro power, Nuclear power and electricity imported from Bhutan.
The rising power demand in the country has been aided by an increased output from the hydro power plants which contributes second largest share in total output after the thermal power plants.
A fall in hydro power output in the previous fiscal had set the tone for drastic surge in coal imports. However, hydro power plants have performed better in the current fiscal.
A source-wise break-up of power generation indicates that output from hydro plants had continued its rise on the y-o-y basis for the third successive month. Hydro power output grew 24% Y-o-Y to 17.421 BU in Sep’18.

Although hydro output had fallen on the monthly basis in Sep’18, but, total output from hydro plants in the first half period of FY19 (Apr’18-Sep’18) has increased 3% to 83.377 BU against 81.384 BU recorded in the corresponding period of FY17. Besides attaining its scheduled target set for the period.
Output from thermal plants had increased 3% Y-o-Y to 87.18 BU in Sep’18 compared with 84.867 BU in Sep’17, which was also 5% higher on the month from 83.403 BU in Aug’18.
Nuclear power output was 2.561 BU, which has dropped both on the monthly and yearly basis in Sep’18.
Power generation from the conventional sources has totaled 635.525 BU during H1 FY19, up 4% Y-o-Y from 611.255 BU in H1 FY18. The half yearly output has reached the half way mark of the generation target of 1265 BU set for FY19.
