India: Conventional Power Generation Down 9% M-o-M in Jun’17

Indian Conventional power generation has fallen 9% M-o-M to 97.21 BU (Billion Units) in Jun’17, according to the provisional data provided by Power Ministry of India. The country had generated 107.06 BU in May’17.

Power generation from conventional sources include thermal power (coal, gas and diesel), hydro power, nuclear power and electricity imported from Bhutan.

During Jun’17, thermal power generation decreased 13% M-o-M to 79.95 BU. As a result, PLF of thermal power plants (based on coal and lignite) fell 11% on the month to 57.43 in Jun’17 compared with 64.39 in May’17.

On the yearly basis, Power generation in Jun’17 was almost similar to the power generation of 97.33 BU in Jun’16.

Total conventional power generation during the first quarter of FY18 (Apr’17-Jun’17) stood 307.66 BU, which was 4% higher than 296.57 BU produced during Apr’16-Jun’16.

Power Plants Installed Capacity:
The first unit of 150 MW of India Power Thermal power plant located in West Bengal was commissioned and added during Jun’17. Also, Second unit (20 MW) of New Umtru Hydro Power Station in Meghalaya goes on-stream during the month.

Unit No 3 and 4 of Sterlite Thermal power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in Jhadsuguda has been converted into captive Power plant. Sterlite TPP had installed capacity of 2400 MW (4X 600 MW). Out of which 1200 MW (2X 600 MW) would be now utilized by Vedanta for its captive utilization in aluminium production. Hence, it had been removed from the total installed capacity of India.

Total Installed capacity stood 329230.6 MW as on Jun’17.
