India: Conventional Power Generation Down 8% M-o-M in Jun’18

India’s conventional power generation has come down 8% on the month in Jun’18, providing a slight relief to the coal-fired power station.

According to the tentative report provided by the Power Ministry, power generation from the conventional sources have decreased 8% M-o-M to 102.08 BU (Billion Unit) in Jun’18, against 110.61 BU in May’18.

Power generation from Conventional sources include thermal power generation (from Coal, diesel and gas plants), Hydro power, Nuclear power and electricity imported from Bhutan.

During the month of June, demand for power generally gets lower in the country with summer season drawing to a close; moreover, hydro power generation is also gradually increased with the commencement of the rainy season.

The coal-fired plants would be certainly benefited from the low power demand in the monsoon season, as the available coal stock at the power station had fallen to a 5-month low of 19.084 MnT at the end of May’18.

Subsequently, CIL had already instructed the power producers to use this period as an opportunity to build their coal stock to cope with the subsequent increase in power demand.

The report from the power ministry also indicates that thermal plants had produced more power than their set target during the first quarter of FY19 (Apr’18-Jun’18) to compensate for the loss in hydro power generation.

Total thermal power generation during Apr’18-Jun’18 was 275.102 BU, up 2% from its actual target of 270.11 BU. While, Hydro power generation had attained 94% of its set target of 33.515 BU, in the period.

Source-wise Power Generation in Jun’18:
Thermal power generation decreased 12% M-o-M to 85.20 BU in Jun’18 compared with 96.58 BU in May’18. Besides, the generation was also 2% lower than the scheduled target of 87.084 BU set for the month.

Hydro power generation increased 24% M-o-M to 13.19 BU, and had duly attained its monthly target of 13.038 BU in Jun’18.

Nuclear power generation was marked 3.22 BU in Jun’18, up 4% M-o-M from 3.09 BU in May’18.
