India: Coal vessel arrival rises by 5% during Jan-Jul’22; Panamax cargoes top the list

Despite elevated global coal prices this year, India’s coal vessel arrival at Indian ports has witnessed a rise of 5% y-o-y basis with 146.7 mnt brought in during January-July 2022 period.

Out of the total number of vessels arrived during the said period, the share of Panamax cargoes has been the highest which brought about 43.8 mnt while shipments by Handysize vessels have been the lowest.

Capesize vessel arrival recorded a rise of 7% with 62 mnt of coal brought in during the first seven months of the year.

Thermal coal vessel arrival up 7%

During January-July 2022, a domestic coal supply crunch incentivised thermal coal imports with a 7% y-o-y rise in vessel arrival.

Shipments via Panamax vessels were the highest at 21.4 mnt. Despite high prices, India’s coal imports from Indonesia recorded a rise of 38% y-o-y to 67 mnt during the said period due to surged power demand and government’s directive to blend 10% of imported coal.

The quantity brought in by Capesize vessel rose by 8%, but that of Babycape fell by 19% y-o-y during January-July 2022. 

Coking coal shipments decline

The coking coal import volumes fell by 7% during January-July 2022 at 40 mnt. The maximum quantity was bought in by Capesize vessels but volumes recorded a drop of 6% y-o-y. Interestingly, shipments by Babycape vessels rose by 28% y-o-y in the said period.

Met coke vessel arrival rises

Met coke vessel arrival rose by 12% y-o-y at 1.7 mnt in the period under review. The quantity arrived via Panamax cargoes were the highest at 0.6 mnt, marking a 500% rise on a y-o-y basis.

India’s met coke imports from China rose this year amid its cheaper availability. Shipments from Babycape vessels were lower by 20%, while Handysize vessels were nil.

Pet coke imports surge

Amid elevated thermal coal prices this year, imported pet coke demand had gained strength as it witnessed a whopping 121% rise in imports.

Pet coke imports via Panamax and Supramax rose over 200% on a y-o-y basis.

Anthracite imports rise

A 27% y-o-y rise was also witnessed in anthracite imports in the first seven months of the year at 1.4 mnt. Shipments via Panamax vessels jumped 105% y-o-y.

Anthracite quantity arrived by Babycape and Supramax fell sharply by 37% and 70% respectively.
