Coal imports at India’s 12 major ports have slightly come down on the month to 10.374 MnT in Oct’19 as against 10.515 MnT in Sep’19, as per the data provided by Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.
Imports of thermal and steam grade of coal had seen an up-tick of 1% on the month to 6.227 MnT in Oct’19, compared with 6.183 MnT in Sep’19.
On the other hand, recent production cut across steel industries had extended the monthly drop witnessed in coking coal shipments. Apparently, coking and other coal grades’ import was down 4% M-o-M to 4.147 MnT in Oct’19.
Paradip remained the largest coal handling port in Oct’19 with receipt of 2.411 MnT coal, followed by Ennore (1.49 MnT), Visakhapatnam (1.456 MnT), Kandla (1.253 MnT) and Kolkata (1.089 MnT).

Total Coal Shipments in FY20:
Total coal volume handled at the major ports have fallen 9% Y-o-Y to 84.537 MnT during the first 7 months of CY19 (Apr-Oct’19) compared with 93.369 MnT.
The lower coal volume was attributed to the reduced appetite for thermal coal shipments, incited by a better stock position at power plants comparable to the previous fiscal. Notably, imports of thermal and steam coal have fallen 18% on the year to 51.1 MnT in the 7-month period.
Remaining volume comprising of coking and other grade of coal increased 7% Y-o-Y to 33.437 MnT in Apr-Oct’19.
Decline in coal shipments was seen unvarying across the individual ports, apparently barring Kandla and Mormugao all the remaining ports had recorded y-o-y fall in coal receipt during Apr-Oct’19.
