According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 3% on the month to 12.274 MnT in Nov’17 against 11.947 MnT in Oct’17.
The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.
Out of the total quantity, Thermal & Steam coal shipments had increased 9% M-o-M to 8.421 MnT in Nov’17. Coking & Other grade of coal shipments which had arrived at the ports fell 8% on the month to 3.853 MnT during the same period.
Increased demand from both Power and Non-power sector had supported imports of the Thermal & Steam coal, which have been rising on the monthly basis since Sep’17, while Imports of Coking & Other coal grades’ import have been continuously falling during the same period.
Paradip port had handled the highest coal shipments during Nov’17, followed by Kamajar(Ennore), Vizag and Kolkata ports.

Quantity in MnT
Coal Shipments in FY18:
Total coal shipments handled at the major ports were down 5% Y-o-Y to 90.323 MnT during Apr’17-Nov’17, compared with 95.294 MnT in Apr’16-Nov’16.
Despite recording growth on the monthly basis, Total Thermal & Steam coal imports have decreased 9% Y-o-Y to 57.483 MnT during Apr’17-Nov’17, compared with 63.184 MnT coal shipments recorded during the same period in FY17.
Coking & Other coal grades’ imports registered growth of 2% during the same period (Apr’17-Nov’17) to 32.84 MnT.
Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Mormugao and Mumbai were the ports which had recorded growth on Y-o-Y basis in total coal shipments handled for FY18, whereas JNPT and Chennai ports have not received a single coal shipment during the period.
