India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Up 18% Y-o-Y in Apr’19

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 18% on the year to 16.433 MnT in Apr’19 against 13.914 MnT in Apr’18.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

Imports of both thermal and metallurgical coal had witnessed significant rise during the month.

A grade-wise break-up of shipments indicate that thermal and steam coal imports were recorded at 10.917 MnT in Apr’19, rising 13% Y-o-Y from 9.691 MnT in Apr’18. Notably, thermal and steam coal shipments had crossed the 10 MnT mark for the first time in past 15-months.

Coking and other coal shipments attained a 5-month high total, while rising 31% Y-o-Y to 5.516 MnT in Apr’19.

Among the individual ports, Paradip remained the largest coal receiving port in Apr’19, despite recording slight fall in monthly shipments. Imports were marked at 3.959 MnT in Apr’19 as against 3.979 MnT in Apr’18.

Kandla port was the second-largest coal receiver during the month, the port had handled 2.94 MnT coal in Apr’19, which was 86% higher on the year from 1.584 MnT in Apr’18.

No shipments were recorded at JNPT, Chennai and Cochin ports.

Weekly Coal Shipments Down to Lowest Levels in CY19:

Indian coal imports have fallen to its lowest mark in CY19, as per the data provided by CoalMint’s weekly import report.

A weekly comparison of import shipment indicate coal volume arriving at the ports had decreased 47% to 3.35 MnT during Week 18 (29 Apr’19-5 May’19) period compared with 6.36 MnT in the preceding week.

With cyclone “Fani” making landfall in Odhisha state, port operation at all the adjacent ports ports were hampered.

Notably, shipments at Paradip, Dhamra and Haldia ports had recorded W-o-W decline of 40%, 72% and 24% respectively, during the period.
