According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 16% Y-o-Y to 121.14 MnT during Apr’18-Dec’18 compared with 104.177 MnT in Apr’17-Dec’17 period.
The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Deendayal port (formerly known as Kandla).
A grade-wise break-up of shipments arrived at ports indicate that imports of thermal and steam grades of coal at the major ports have increased to 78.244 MnT in Apr’18-Dec’18, up 17% Y-o-Y from 66.872 MnT in Apr’17-Dec’17.
Remaining shipments comprised of Coking and other coal which has totaled 42.896 MnT during the 9-month period, rising 15% Y-o-Y from 37.305 MnT recorded in the same period last year.
Among the individual ports, Paradip remained the highest coal receiver in FY19; taking 28% of the total shipment in the 9-month period.
Chennai and JNPT has not received a single coal shipment during FY19, while among others only Cochin and Mormugao have witness a fall in imported coal arrivals on the y-o-y basis.
Monthly Arrival at Ports:
Coal imports at ports continued its fall on the month in Dec’18, as it decreased 2% M-o-M to 14.062 MnT against 14.297 MnT in Nov’18.
Thermal and steam coal shipments, rebounded during the month, marked 2% higher on the month at 8.642 MnT in Dec’18. Coking and other coal imports had fell 7% M-o-M to 5.42 MnT in Dec’18.
Paradip remained the highest coal receiving port, despite recording a slight fall in monthly imports. The Odisha-based port had received 3.806 MnT coal in Dec’18 against 3.829 MnT in Nov’18.
Ennore, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Kandla were the other major coal receivers in Dec’18, notably all of them had witness growth in monthly coal imports.
