India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Rises 11% Y-o-Y in Apr’18-May’18

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 11% Y-o-Y to 28.225 MnT during Apr’18-May’18 against 25.475 MnT in Apr’17-May’17.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

Import of thermal and steam coal shipments at the ports had recorded a growth of 19% Y-o-Y to 19.278 MnT during Apr’18-May’18, against 16.226 MnT coal in Apr’17-May’17. However, on the monthly basis, thermal and steam coal shipments had slightly fell on the month to 9.587 MnT in May’18 compared with 9.691 MnT in Apr’18.

On the other hand, shipments of Coking coal and other coal had fell 3% on the year to 8.947 MnT during the first two months of FY18 compared with 9.249 MnT during the same period last fiscal. But, imports had increased 12% on the month to 4.735 MnT in May’18.

During May’18, total coal imports at the ports stood 14.322 MnT, up 3% M-o-M from 13.903 MnT in Apr’18.

Port-wise Coal Imports in May’18:
Paradip remained the largest coal receiving port in May’18. Import at the port had remain almost unchanged at 3.963 MnT in May’18 against 3.979 MnT in Apr’18.

Ennore, Kolkata, Kandla and V.O. Chidambaranar were among the other major coal receiving port in May’18.

During May’18, Only 2 ports namely- Kandla and New Mangalore, had witnessed a sizeable drop in coal handing on the monthly basis. JNPT, Chennai, and Cochin ports had not received any coal shipments during the month.
