According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 13% Y-o-Y to 13.903 MnT in Apr’18 against 12.344 MnT in Apr’17.
The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.
Steady demand from the power sector has seen thermal and steam coal shipments rising during the month of Apr’18. Shipments of thermal and steam coal handled at the major ports had increased 24% Y-o-Y to 9.691 MnT in Apr’18 compared with 7.794 MnT in Apr’17.
On the other hand, shipments of Coking coal and other coal had fell 7% on the year to 4.212 MnT in Apr’18 compared with 4.55 MnT in Apr’17.
Among the Individual ports, Paradip remained the largest coal receiver, with import rising 28% on the year to 3.979 MnT in Apr’18 compared with 3.105 MnT in Apr’17.
Ennore, Kandla, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam were among the other major coal receiving port in Apr’18.
During Apr’18, Only 3 ports namely-V.O. Chidambaranar, Mumbai and Mormugao, had witnessed a drop in coal handing on the yearly basis. JNPT, Chennai, and Cochin ports had not received any coal shipments during the month.
