Coal Imports at Major Indian Ports

India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Down 6% M-o-M in Jan’19

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have hit a 4-month low in Jan’19.

Coal imports had fell 6% on the month to 13.188 MnT in Jan’19 against 14.062 MnT in Dec’18.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Deendayal port (previously known as Kandla).

A grade-wise break-up of shipments arrived at ports indicate that imports of both thermal and coking coal had recorded their lowest monthly total since Oct’18.

Thermal and steam coal shipments had fell 4% M-o-M to 8.263 MnT in Jan’19, while Coking and other coal shipments had decreased 9% M-o-M to 4.925 MnT during the month.

Among the individual ports, Paradip remained the highest coal receiver in Jan’19; despite witnessing a fall of 10% in monthly coal receipt.

Kolkata with import of 2.437 MnT came behind at second, followed by Ennore, Vishakhapatnam and Kandla ports.

Chennai, JNPT and Cochin port have not received any coal shipment during the month, while among the remaining only 4 ports had noted an increase in monthly coal imports during Jan’19.

Coal shipments received upto Jan’19:
Total coal shipments received at the major ports have flourished during the first 10 months of FY19 (Apr’18-Jan’19).

As per the data, the 12 major ports have received a total of 134.328 MnT coal, rising 13% Y-o-Y from 119.258 MnT recorded a year earlier in the same period.

Thermal and steam coal shipments, increased 12% Y-o-Y to 86.507 MnT. Remaining shipment comprising of coking and other coal, were up 13% Y-o-Y to 47.821 MnT during Apr’18-Jan’19.

Paradip, the highest coal receiver, which accounted for 28% of the total coal volume had taken 37.29 MnT coal in the 10 month period.
