India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Down 18% M-o-M in Feb’18

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have decreased 18% on the month to 12.387 MnT in Feb’18 against 15.19 MnT in Jan’18.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

During Feb’18, shipments of both thermal & steam coal and Coking & other coal, had fallen over the month.

Upon improved domestic coal availability, thermal and steam coal imports were down 17% M-o-M to 8.588 MnT in Feb’18, compared with 10.306 MnT in Jan’18. Paradip port had received the highest thermal & steam coal shipment of 2.783 MnT during the month, which was 13% lower on the month compared with 3.186 MnT in Jan’18.

Amongst the 12 major ports, only Mangalore and V.O. Chidambaranar port had witnessed the growth in thermal & steam coal imports; while 4 ports, namely-Mormugao, Cochin, Chennai and JNPT port had not received any coal shipment in Feb’18.

Coking and other coal shipments had also fallen 22% M-o-M to 3.799 MnT in Feb’18, as prevalence of higher Coking coal prices had lowered the buying interest among Indian buyers.

Kolkata port had received the highest Coking and other coal shipment in Feb’18; while Mumbai port was the only one to have recorded growth in imports on the monthly basis.

Total Coal Shipments in FY18:
Total coal shipments handled at the major ports had increased 2% Y-o-Y to 132.003 MnT during Apr’17-Feb’18 period, against the total of 129.642 MnT recorded in the same period last fiscal.

Coking and other coal shipments had risen 4% Y-o-Y to 46.43 MnT during FY18 (Upto Feb’18). In addition, thermal and steam coal shipments were also recorded 0.49% higher on the year at 85.573 MnT during Apr’17-Feb’18.

Among the individual ports, Paradip port was the largest coal receiver in FY18, which, along with Visakhapatnam and Mormugao port had recorded growth in coal import on the year-on-year basis.
