India: Coal Imports slip at Gangavaram Port

Gangavaram port has registered a significant fall in coal imports. Import here shows a constant fall since last few consecutive weeks of Oct’14.

At Gangavaram port, countries one of the largest  coal importing ports,  imports have slipped by 70% in Oct’14 compared to previous month and fallen by 37% Y-o-Y. The major reason behind this fall is natural calamity Hudhud, which hits the port at the mid of Oct’14. Port imports on an average of 1 MnT of coal per month.

Closed port operations have hampered coal import activities at ports. Meanwhile, port has not discharged any vessel at the end of week 41 & 42. In current situation, a large number of coal vessels are waiting at Gangavaram port. However, few vessels have moved at berth on 30 Oct, 2014.

“Gangavaram Port Authority mentioned, “Amid Cyclonic Hudhud, Gangavaram port’s operations were suspended, which has now started from last week. The movement of vessels has resumed from 30 Oct, 2014.”

Ports has imported about 7.2 MnT of coal in H1 FY15 and imported about 3.4 MnT & 3.8 MnT coal in consecutive quarters of FY15.

Currently, port is handling about 1.3 MnT of coal stock at the end of week 44. Out of the total quantity, about 0.90 MnT is Thermal and 0.45 MnT is Coking coal.
