India, a significant player in global dry fuel imports, has imported about 18.3 MnT coal in the month of Feb’15 registering a downfall of 8.5% as compared to last month.
India, which is one of the prime players in dry fuel imports across the globe, imported 18.3 MnT coal in Feb’15 and registered a decline of 8.5%. As per SteelMint’s data analysis, coal import of all grades stood at 18.3 MnT, out of which, 14.3 MnT is Non-coking, 3.6 is Coking and about 0.3 MnT is Coke & Anthracite.
Indian coal import expected to reach about 230 MnT at the end of FY 15 which is an increase of about 28% Y-o-Y.
Country’s declining coal imports over the last three months, indicate that import figure is likely to reach the previous level. Country’s import was at its peak in Nov’14 and registered the highest import of about 22.3 MnT.

Top Exporting Countries
Indonesia, Australia and South Africa were the major suppliers of coal at month end. Indonesia remains to be the top exporter of Non-coking coal and supplied about 10.3 MnT; down by 5.5% against Jan’15. Australia and South Africa supplied about 3.8 MnT and 2.5 MnT coal respectively. In February, India imported about 0.18 MnT of Met Coke from China.
Major Discharging Ports
About 70% of coal was imported at key ports of the country. Among the major Indian ports, Mundra imported maximum quantity of about 2.8 MnT, followed by Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram ports, which imported of 1.5 MnT and 1.4 MnT respectively.
County’s Major Importers
SteelMint assessed that Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, SAIL and JSW Steel are the major importers of Coal; importing around 2.0 MnT, 1.6 MnT, 1.1 MnT and 0.9 MnT respectively.
Indian steel giants, Essar & Tata Steel, have imported around 0.82 MnT and0.51 MnT coal respectively in Feb’15. Import of SAIL declined marginally against last month.
Albeit coal import is expected to increase in coming months due to running coal block auction in India, many sponge and power producers have lost their mines which may intern additional demand from India. Cheaper coal availability in the international market also supported imports.
