Coal Imports at India’s 12 major ports has fallen 12% Y-o-Y to 55.638 MnT during Apr’17-Aug’17, in comparison with 63.581 MnT coal during Apr’16-Aug’16 period, according to the data provided by Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The ports have received 35.128 MnT thermal and steam coal shipments against total quantity of 20.51 MnT Coking and other grade coal shipments during the period.
Paradip port had handled the largest coal quantity during the Apr’17-Aug’17 period, followed by Ennore, Kolkata (including shipments of Haldia port), Vizag and Mormugao.
Among the 12 ports, only Mormugao port has witnessed an increase in coal handling during the Apr’17-Aug’17 period. Import at the port has increased 2% Y-o-Y to 4.957 MnT, while imports at all other ports have declined.
Chennai port and Jawaharlal Nehru port at New Mumbai have not received any coal shipment in FY18.
Coal Traffic Handled during Aug’17:
On the monthly basis, the 12 major ports had received 9.305 MnT coal shipments in Aug’17. Of the total coal traffic handled during the month, 5.305 MnT shipment belonged to thermal and steam coal and the remaining 4 MnT were of coking and other grade of coal.
Paradip port continued to remain the major coal handling port in Aug’17. While, coal shipments recorded at Cochin port were nil during the month, in addition to JNPT and Chennai port where generally no coal is imported.
