Coal India Ltd (CIL) has continued the steady growth in terms of coal supplied to the power plants during the first 9-months of FY19.
As per the data provided by Coal Ministry, the coal major has supplied 360 MnT coal to the power plants in Apr-Dec’18, which was almost 81% of the total coal dispatched in the period.
The allotted coal quantity to the plants was 8% higher on the year from 333.4 MnT in Apr-Dec’17. However, coal supply of 42.4 MnT in Dec’18 was almost stable on the month against 42.5 MnT in Nov’18.
Following in the footsteps of CIL, SCCL had also posted remarkable growth in coal supplies to the power plants. The company has dispatched 40 MnT coal to the power plants in Apr-Dec’18, up 3% Y-o-Y from 38.7 MnT recorded in Apr-Dec’17.
SCCL’s monthly coal dispatch to power sector was 5 MnT in Dec’18.
Thriving on higher supplies from CIL and SCCL, coal stock at the power plants has now rose to its highest level since Jul’17.
According to the data provided by CEA, combined coal stock at the power plants was recorded at 21.66 MnT at the end of Dec’18, 22% higher on the month from 17.814 MnT in Nov’18.
Coal Allocation in CIL’s E-Auctions:
CIL is likely to gain from the improved stock levels at the power stations, by increasing the quantity of coal offered in the e-auction schemes.
A break-up of various e-auctions indicate that lesser coal was allocated during the first 9-months of FY19.

Quantity in MnT
Coal allocation under spot e-auction has fallen 45% Y-o-Y to 22.26 MnT in Apr’18-Dec’18. Allotment during the month had significantly improved m-o-m in Dec’18, but was still 63% lower on the year from 9.13 MnT in Dec’17.
Exclusive e-auction for non-power sector had seen allocation after a gap of 3-months, noted at 0.62 MnT in Dec’18. Total allocation in the 9-month period was down 26% Y-o-Y to 7.93 MnT in Apr-Dec’18.
No allocation was made under Special forward e-auction for power sector in Dec’18. Besides, total coal allotted under this scheme has decreased 20% Y-o-Y to 21.91 MnT.
However, Special spot e-auction have fetched better results in terms of coal supplies.
Allotment in Special spot auction during the 9-month period of FY19 has overtaken the total managed in the entire of FY18. A total of 2 MnT has been supplied under this scheme of auction during Apr-Dec’18, with 1.5 MnT allotted in Dec’18 itself.
