Coal India Ltd (CIL) is planning to set up a coal-to-chemical plant at Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) in Odisha. The plant will utilise high ash coal to produce ammonium nitrate which is a component used in making of explosives. The price of explosives, a key input material for excavating coal, has gone up substantially in recent times.
